at studio 19, dynamic yoga classes are taught on the basis of the five natural elements, the primary energies of all existence: earth water fire air and space.
these five elements are expressed in the five techniques of hatha yoga: asana which means stillness, is an expression of earth; vinyasa which means movement, is an expression of water; bhandas which means transformation, is an expression of fire; pranayama which means breath, is an expression of air; and drushti which means focused awareness, is an expression of space.
these five techniques are fundamental to a hatha yoga practice - they create an internal dynamic which distinguishes yoga, a spiritual practice, from exercise or shape making. the five techniques also keep your practice safe and effective.
a 5-week foundation course introduces students to dynamic yoga. each week
focuses on one of the five natural
elements. the course uses simple, symmetrical movements accessable to most
people. the movements are kept simple in order to focus on the technique and
how the movement is being made. the foundation course is a requirement for
all new students, regardless of their yoga background. following the foundation
course, classes focus on the integration of the five techniques and gradually,
more and more postures are introduced.
studio 19 offers private classes, small group classes, and weekend workshops. for more details on these options, visit the section on prices.
