Meditation has nothing to do with controlling the mind and everything to do with letting go and relaxing. To meditate is not to stop thinking. To be human is to think; inherently there is nothing wrong with thinking. The problem comes when we identify with our thoughts; when we personalize them - my feelings, my beliefs, my opinion.

Through meditation, we learn to see our thoughts for what they really are, projections. This does not mean that thoughts are random or meaningless, in fact where the mind moves when you first sit down to meditate is important and is telling you something; these thoughts should not be pushed away they need to be addressed. The point is to not identify with your thoughts, to not judge them, to not personalize them but just be aware of them.

The purpose of meditation is mindfulness; to be aware of that which is actually happening, to see through the projections of the mind. As the mind begins to settle, thoughts become less personalised until they become less frequent, and ultimately, the true nature of the self is revealed. Once the true nature of the self is revealed, then we realize that the sense of self is merely an impression, that nothing is personal, and that we are free...
