The Yoga Sutras
In The Yoga Sutras , Patanjali, who is considered the father of yoga, says that yoga is the settling of the mind into silence. Easier said than done! The human mind, by its very nature, is always moving - one thought immediately leads to another thought, which immediately leads to another thought, and so on, and so on. Whether we are awake or asleep, the mind just keeps moving without us telling it to do so. In this age of technology, with so much information and so many distractions surrounding us, our minds are constantly stimulated. Settling the mind into silence may seem impossible, but it's not.
Patanjali writes about the eight limbs of yoga, which tell us how to surrender and thereby quiet the mind.
- Yama - laws of life
- Sensitivity
- Honesty
- Openness
- Focus
- Generosity
- Niyama - rules for living
- Commitment
- Contentment
- Enthusiasm
- Self inquiry
- Surrender to the lord
- Asana - postures
- Pranayama - breathing exercises
- Pratyahara - retirement of the senses
- Dharana - focusing of attention
- Dhyana - meditation
- Samadhi - the settled mind
